Wishing You a Spudtacular Holiday

Wishing You a Spudtacular Holiday

If you’re anything like me, you are truly looking forward to Christmas next week! I absolutely love the holidays and the joy that they bring to me. I personally enjoy the time I have with family and friends (and the time off of work, just kidding.), the opportunity to count my blessings, and most of all the heart-warming of giving back to those around me. Do you love the holidays? Are you stoked for Christmas with your family? Are you practically Buddy the Elf? OR do you dread the holidays? Dislike the hustle bustle of last minute shoppers? Feel a little BAH HUM-BUG all of December?

Well, whatever it is; regardless if you strap on the reindeer antlers or scowl at the “ugly” Christmas sweater parties throughout the month of December, I have a small treat for you!

As we prepare for the upcoming holiday, I would like to give you a few Spud Facts that will help prepare you for the inevitably long family visits that are quickly approaching! What’s a better conversation starter than some good quality spud facts?! When your family members begin to ask the typical “how’s school?”, “how are your grades?”, “how’s your honey?” (honey= partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.), “when are you going to tie the knot?”, etc. here’s some random potato facts that will surely change the conversation!

  • Did you know that the average American eats around 124-140 pounds of potatoes throughout the year? (That’s a HUGE amount!! But, the average German eats around 200+ pounds a year!!! WHAT?!)
  • Potatoes are used in making Vodka! (Cheers to that! ;))
  • Today, there are potatoes grown throughout all 50 States in the US and in more than 125 countries across the world! (I read a fact one time that said: every year enough potatoes are grown worldwide to cover a four-lane motorway circling the world six times!!)
  • Potatoes are the 2nd most consumed food by Americans, coming in right behind dairy! (Which I must add, dairy is it’s own category; while potatoes are under the produce category…)
  • The world’s largest potato weighed in at 18 pounds, 4 ounces according to the Guinness Book of World Records. That’s enough for 73 portions of medium fries at McDonald’s!! (Imagine that return on investment for McDonald’s! WOW!!)

These five solid facts are sure to get your family more focused on Potatoes and less focused on YOU! (Hopefully.. I’m not actually promising anything.)

Happy Holidays!!

XOXO,

Jess

9 newsFYI– I love puns, but I am running out of clever ones…

Anyways, hi everyone! I just finished a new link on our website coloradopotato.org. Did you know that Colorado Potatoes are high in Vitamin C and have more potassium than a banana? (“It’s bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!”) Potatoes get such a bad wrap in the press, but they’re actually VERY good for you– surprise, surprise!

CPAC has joined Potatoes USA in their new campaign- “What Are You Eating? Potatoes. Real Food. Real Performance.” because we truly believe that potatoes are just the thing many athletes are missing to take their performance from good to better, or better to best! My favorite part of this new campaign is that it is geared toward all athletes, whether you run marathons, 5K races, or simply RUN late (me..), the potato can help you get there! Not only are potatoes packed with vitamins, but they are also only 110 calories!!

Check out the new page (https://www.coloradopotato.org/athletics-potatoes-powering-performance/) and learn more about bettering your performance by enjoying delicious Colorado Potatoes!

Gotta run! 😉

“Eyes” of a Spectater

“Eyes” of a Spectater

The 2018 PMA Fresh Summit did not disappoint! Linda and Jim had warned me many times that it would be a HUGE produce convention, but HOLY GUACAMOLE! (Wholly Guacamole served mini hotdogs with their guacamole on them, life changing! Try it guys!)

On Thursday, Linda and I went to the convention center to set up our potato display for the show Friday and Saturday. We walked into the convention hall, there were signs upon signs through the 8 Hall (Halls A-H) span… surely I would be prepared for the THOUSANDS of people that would flood the hall the following morning, right? WRONG!

As I entered the Hall on Friday morning I felt like Dory from Finding Nemo, “just keep swimming… swimming…. swimming”. My complete objective for the weekend changed from talk to as many Potato companies from around the world to sample as much produce as possible, GO! (Just kidding, but seriously, if you like fruits and veggies, this show is AWESOME!) Linda and I got all settled in at our CPAC booth and she began to encourage me to “walk the show”. At 10:30 AM I finally agreed and ventured away from the CDA (Colorado Department of Ag) Island… I WAS NOT READY.

I took 4 steps away and instantly started panicking… WHERE’S MY BOOTH? Soooo, I went down the aisle about 18 blocks, turned left, turned left again and came back. I probably made this loop a thousand times throughout the next two days… Every time I walked away from our little island I was determined to find something new, innovative and of course, delicious! Y’all, I LOVE fruits and veggies– the sample didn’t stand a chance (LOL).

PRO-TIP: make a “PMA Wish List” prior to going to the show!
